Forum Title: 16X16 CMU pillars for deck, roof, and post column

Hello, I couldn't get an answer from the Framing form so I thought I would try here, I want to build a 18' wide x 12' deep free standing deck on 16 x16 CMU pillars, in addition I want 6 X 6 post anchored to the CMU in order to support the roof covering the deck. I came up with a brain storm of attaching the perimeter of the platform to the side of the CMU and anchoring my post to the top of the CMU with a homemade simpson strong tie design using a piece of U channel steel welded to two pieces of angle iron that has a 6 vertical support for the post, The steel I intend to use is approx. 1/4 thick. My first question is do you think a 16 x 16 CMU pillar would work and be enough support for all dead loads? Second question is how wide does the concrete footing under the 16 x 16 need to be?
